CII’s Islet Laboratory authors book chapter on Total Pancreatectomy and Islet Cell Autotransplantation (TP-IAT)

Dr. Appakalai Balamurugan, director of the University of Louisville Cardiovascular Innovation Institute’s Islet Transplant Program, recently authored a chapter within a new book publication, “Pancreatitis: Medical and Surgical Management”.  The chapter is co-authored with pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Melena Bellin, from the Schulze Diabetes Institute at the University of Minnesota.


The chapter which is entitled, “Total Pancreatectomy and islet cell autotransplantation: the science of islet cell preservation, from pancreas to liver”, discusses the islet isolation procedure step by step as well as optimizing conditions for maximizing islet yield during the isolation process and increasing the likelihood of successful engraftment and function after transplantation into the liver.
